A synthesis-oriented model of phrasal pitch movements in standard Chinese

چکیده
This paper proposes a computable, tone-driven method to model phrasal pitch movements in standard Chinese by (1) formulating physical constraints for phonetic control mechanisms, (2) de ning four phrasal tones quanti ed by model parameters for generating phrasal tunes, and (3) forming phrasal pitch movements by mapping lexical tones onto phrasal tunes. Several experiments con rm the method's validity. The proposed method is an e ective component technology for analyzing, synthesizing and understanding spoken Chinese intonation.

The Effect of Conceptual Metaphor Awareness on Learning Phrasal Verbs by Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners
The ability to comprehend and produce phrasal verbs, as lexical chunks or groups of words which are commonly found together, is an important part of language learning. This study investigates the effect of ‘conceptual metaphor awareness’, as a newly developed technique in Cognitive Linguistics, on learning phrasal verbs by Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To meet this objective, two intact ho...
متن کاملPhrasal Prominences do not need Pitch Movements: Postfocal Phrasal Heads in Italian
Informationally Given phrases following an instance of focus are generally realized in a compressed pitch range and are assumed to lack prosodic prominences above the word level. In this paper, we address the question of the metrical representation of postfocal constituents in Tuscan Italian. The results of a production experiment show that, despite their being realized with a low and flat F0 c...
متن کاملTianjinese Lexical Tone, Tone Sandhi, and Prosody: Amplitude-f0 Dependency under Prominence in Mandarin
In Tianjin Mandarin, f0 and amplitude track together on low (L) tone T1, low rising (LH) tone T3, and high falling (HL) tone T4, as is claimed to be true generally of Standard Mandarin (see Yip 2002). In contrast, lexical high tone T2 f0 tracks least systematically with amplitude, whereas tonesandhi derived high tones on T3 and T2 co-vary with amplitude most consistently. The tone sandhi induce...
متن کاملPost-focus pitch register lowering as a phrasal marker - An acoustic study of focus and phrasing in Shanghai Chinese
This paper reports an experiment designed to investigate whether post-focus tonal realization is constrained by prosodic structure in Shanghai Chinese (SH). Previous studies have shown that in SH, focus expanded the f0 range of bi-syllabic tone sandhi words while pitch register lowering, instead of pitch range compression, was consistently found on post-focus bi-syllabic tone sandhi words. The ...
متن کاملA Linguistic Rhythm Observed from the Respiratory Muscle Movements and Speech Waveforms by English, Japanese and Chinese L1 and L2 - The Recitation of a Story
To investigate the relationships between respiratory control and the speech signal in the recitation of a story in English, Japanese, and Chinese, I compared and analysed the respiratory muscle movements utilising Strangage and simultaneously recorded speech signal. The subjects were English, Japanese and Chinese speakers. The results showed that (1) the Chinese showed no significant difference...
